Today, the current estimated jackpot for the Powerball lottery drawing is $1.5 billion, equaling out to $930 million in cash value. The odds of winning the grand prize through the nine different ways to win, mathematically speaking, are about 1 in 292,201,338, according to Powerball itself.
Did you know that, scientifically speaking, you are less likely to exist than you are to win the lottery? What that means is that you, yes, you, reading this article right at this very second, you have already beat the odds by being here at all.
During the Powerball drawing, five balls are picked from a bin of 69 white balls, and one red ball is drawn from a different bin of 26 balls. To win the jackpot, you would have to pick numbers to match all five of the white balls, plus the red ball. It is no joke that a mass sum of money such as the lottery winnings would be a nice thing to win. I can make a mental list of what I would do with my earnings, such as paying off my student loans, saving for my dream house and car, paying for my younger siblings to go to college, making sure my parents and grandparents live comfortably, and then a few nice vacations to Europe with my lovely boyfriend before saving the rest for retirement. I think everyone has a pretty similar list to that, if not more lengthy and more elaborate than mine. I don’t spend too much time thinking about the lottery because I do not invest in it, and therefore have no reason to do much more than to work hard for my money and my dreams as a young millennial.
The odds of winning the lottery are very, very low. But this is something that you probably already knew. Think about the odds you have been faced with in life. Maybe this might be the loss of a loved one, beating a terminal illness, being the first member of your family to complete college, surviving depression, and being a warrior in the life you live. You have overcome the obstacles that life has faced you with and you have beat the odds in some sense or another. It is important to remember and recognize that even if you feel like you haven’t done any of those things, and that your life is mundane and not important enough to feel like you’re beating any odds, you have won by just existing.
God loved you before you ever loved yourself. He created you with His hands and good being. For your life on earth, Christ died on the cross to relieve you of all of your sins and worries, and promised you eternal life in heaven if only you promise to follow Him and the life God has designed for you. You were not created by a mistake or an accident or a random coincidence, either. You were made by the hands of a loving, gracious, intentional, and purposeful God who does not make anything that He doesn’t have a specific plan for. God, who created the world, the oceans, the mountains, the most beautiful parts of the landscape of the most beautiful planet that we live on, looked at His handy work and good deeds and decided that the world needed one of you, too. The same God that created the most adorable puppies, the most delicious pizza, and the most awesome and wonderful places to see looked around, and wanted one of you to add to His awesome landscape and vision for the world.
God has a purpose for you. Maybe you haven’t figured it out yet, but He has. He isn’t pacing back and forth trying to figure out what to do with you. He isn’t up at night worrying about that test tomorrow, that work project that you don’t think you have the skill-set for, that next rent bill that money is just not going to add up to cover, and that low life boy who doesn’t even give you the decency of a text back. God doesn’t have you on the back burner trying to put you off until a more convenient time. Everything about you, including the way you think and the way you work, is designed for the life He has given you and the life ahead.
When most people win the lottery, they run into hiding. They retreat in order to safeguard themselves and their windfall of winnings. They usually make a call to the best and most top rated financial and legal team in their state, and go completely anonymous with their cash to avoid public exposure. One of the best parts of being a winning miracle with Christ is that because of His love, we are able to shout from the rooftops and the mountaintops that we are winners. We are saved and we are free to choose our life around the fact that Christ saved us when He died and rose for our sins, proving and solidifying eternal love. Being an eternal winning miracle in Christ means you don’t have to delete your social media accounts, you don’t have to wear a disguise, and you don’t have to change your phone number; instead, embrace these outlets and use your miracle of a life in His arms to tell the world about what kind of Savior we have on our side.
Because we exist, we have already won. We have existence because of what Christ did on that cross for us, with that crown of thorns in His head and those nails in His hands and feet, over 2,000 years ago. We have already won because He already won for us. Our lottery is complete, our investment was our love and trust, and our payout is our eternal life with Him in heaven.
And maybe this gives you more inspiration to keep playing the lottery, and if so, go for it! I hope nothing but good luck and good fortune upon you. But if you’re more like me and would rather just sit back and save your money and your luck, just know that the God of the universe has already given you the winning ticket— a life lived for His glory— you have to choose to believe it, and take your chances on Him. And I can promise you that money will never buy your happiness, but the love and tenderness of Christ and His gentle guiding hand will always lead you home.
So yes, with all of the money in the world, it is technically mathematically feasible to guarantee a lottery victory, that is if you want to buy all of the 292,201,338 possible ticket combinations for a grand total price of $584,402,676.
But, better yet, play the life that God already has intended for you. It is laid out, you just have to put your love, trust, and faith in Him alone.
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
