The Cross In Our Bodies

Do you ever wonder how much God knows about you, how deeply He is engraved into our lives, and how much he cares about you, yes, you?

I often find myself thinking about my sins that I would rather not have God know about, thinking I could somehow keep them from Him and never have him know about it. I often think that there are parts of me that God might not know about, that He might not care to know about, and that He might be too big to know about. There are things about me; personality traits, including my sailors mouth, my sometimes impure mind, and my tendency to not pray as often as I should, that I like to think I can tuck away into this secret pocket of my soul so God will just never know. I want God to know the good things, be proud of my good side, and love me for what makes me a Christ-like woman in His image. I just don’t want Him to know the bad sides, too.

I have found myself very mistaken by this thought and idea. We all have millions of proteins in our bodies called Laminin. It is present in each and every human being. According to scientists, Laminins are a family of proteins that are an integral part of the structural scaffolding of basement membranes in almost every animal tissue. Laminin is a cell adhesion protein molecule that holds together the membranes of our bodies, influencing cell differentiation, migration, adhesion, phenotype, and survival.” This certain cell tells the body what to do and gives specific jobs to the other who call on the resources that only an all-around backbone membrane like laminin can provide. The steel of the human body, the “rebar” of the structure of the body, and the backbone of how the body is held together through cells and membranes and so forth.  The stuff that holds our skin on, the lining of our organs, and the colors of our eyes, is all held together by the laminin protein, and our cells would essentially fall apart without it present, as the protein binds one cell to the other in an infinite cycle to produce a living organism.

Here what a laminin cell looks like:

“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created; things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities. All things were created by Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all thing hold together” // Colossians 1:15-17

The laminin cell is shaped like a cross! We have such an awesome God who is in ALL of the details of our lives, even the details of the cells that hold us together. There is no irony or coincidence in the fact that the cell that does the work of holding the cells together so they don’t fall apart is shaped like a cross; it is by holy doing and graceful circumstance that God carefully designed His people in this very specific way. Here is a lab photo of an up-close laminin cell:

God has concealed little signs of His activity deep within the very structure of creation. It’s like God made this, allowed us to find it, and now is smiling down and waving at us as we learn and grow through this discovery!

We are made in the image of Christ, and He loves us so, so, so much. God has communicated His word to us through His son Jesus Christ and through the Holy Spirit on earth. On top of God speaking the universe into its perfect being, He created each and every one of us in His perfect vision. God created us individually to serve for His glory and goodness on earth, calling us by name (Isaiah 43:1) and loving us graciously and endlessly. God even knitted the human body together with amazing detail and wonder with the very image of the cross that His son died on to wash our sins white as snow.  For by God, all things have been created, things in heaven and things on earth, by Jesus and for Jesus. And he Jesus is before all things and in Him all things hold together. How true is this?! Everything holds together in Jesus Christ. For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Christ, and through Christ to reconcile himself by making peace through His blood shed on a cross. God is so big, and much bigger than we can ever imagine. God is eternal with no beginning and no end, the true definition of infinite. He is existence, and without Him nothing else can exist. God is transcendent, and impossible to ever fully understand. This is all so revealed in the science behind laminin and how we interpret and live in the word of God.

Psalm 139:14 reads “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Jesus WANTS to hold us all together like glue and also, Jesus WANTS to be the glue in our lives. It is not by some freak accident that the cell is shaped in such a specific way; it is by God’s eternal love and mercy and gracious over-bounding joy that we are held together in this way. There is no denying that.God was there before anything else was made, and will be there long after.

And they say great designers always their mark!
